To travel is to Live. Hans Christian Andersen
The Warsaw Ghetto was the largest of all Jewish Ghettos in German-occupied Europe during the World War II. It was established by the German authorities in Nov 1940. These men, women and children were deported to Nazi concentration camps and mass-killing centers. Ghetto residents were sent to Treblinka under the guise of “resettlement in the East”. The ghetto was demolished by the Germans in May 1943 after the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising which had temporarily halted the deportations.
8:00. Breakfast at the hotel, a little bit of this and a little bit of that, en reality a lot bit of this and a lot bit of that!!! All kind of meats, cheeses, sausages, fruits, cereals, pickled veggies, steam sautéed veggies, cereal, coffee, milk, juices, We had some breakfast and made ourselves a sandwich for lunch. (Allowed by the hotel)
9:00 Am. Yazser, our driver, tourist guide came to the hotel to greet us. It was a private tour. We were so happy to have done it this way, 1;20 minutes (100 KM) from Warsaw to get to Treblinka.
I have to tell you a little bit of the story. Too close to my heart because of having Edita (my mom’s cousin) and her family lived a similar experience in Terezin, a concentration camp in the Czech Republic.
Treblinka was administered by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland during WWII. It functioned from July 1942 to October 1943. Unlike other concentration camps, Treblinka was largely destroyed by Nazis as the Soviets advanced in order to cover up the evidence of what happened there.
Today, there is a museum, in which we saw a video done for one of the few men able to escape (only 67 from the 800,000 people there), a miniature layout of the camp, and a memorial to commemorate all those killed there.
We left Treblinka, going back to the city. We needed to uplift our spirit!!! Our guide took us to the Copernicus statue, thanks to him we know that the earth is not the center of the Universe, even though some people think “they are” …, the Polish Academy of Science and the Holy Cross Church, the final resting place of Frederic Chopin’s heart, sealed in an urn. Before he passed in Paris, he asked his eldest sister Ludwika to take his heart before his body could be buried and take it to Warsaw where his heart belonged.
Back to the hotel after buying some Polish Liquor: Gold Vasser, it reminds me of: Licor de Oro in Argentina, I wonder if it is the same!!!!!
Shared a mushroom burger at the hotel, delicious with roasted potatoes. And went up to the room, trying to watch a movie, could not find anything, so here I am back writing a little blog.
Good night for now.
