2nd part of 2nd Day

We came back to the hotel, exhausted after the walking tour, thinking that the day was over….well…..relaxed for a bit, an (being American as we are) called Uber and took us to the European Solidarity Museum. What an experience!

I remember 1980 when Lech Walesa was a big name in Poland, but did not know what he did. The museum shows the story of the Solidarity Movement and Poland´s struggle to wriggle out of the grip of communism. There is a section of the Berlin Wall (Iron Curtain) beside the wall that Walesa climbed to lead the shipyard workers belonging to a Polish non governmental trade union to become the first independent labor union in Soviet·bloc country. Solidarity is considered to have contributed greatly to the fall of communism.. Poland´s communist government attempted to destroy the union by instituting martial law but after many years it negotiated resulted in semi free elections in which Walesa was elected President.
